Are there serious studies to show that green tea can prevent certain diseases? It seems that this kind of tea has been both subject and object to a wide range of clinical and animal studies to discover the secrets of green tea health benefits. Find out how green tea can help you improve your health.

Green tea has been around for centuries and nowadays it has developed into one of the most consumed beverages around the world. Due to its traditional use as medicine in China and India, green tea has made the object of extensive studies concerning its influence upon one disease or another. Green tea is also popular among those who want to lose weight, being a metabolism booster and accelerating fat burning.

What Makes Green Tea Special?

This kind of tea is one of those beverages which most people know about, but many of them haven’t started to consume it until they first heard of green tea health benefits and important aid in the continuous fight with body fat and extra kilos. The actual secret of green tea lies in the fact that it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate.

To be more explicit, green tea is made from unfermented tea leaves which induces the highest concentration of those powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, which I previously mentioned. Antioxidants are substances that fight free radicals which damage cells and can even produce the death of cells. Many scientists thus believe that those antioxidants in green tea reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart diseases and can help one lose weight.

Green Tea and Cancer

Several population-based clinical studies have shown that both green and black teas may help protect against cancer. For example, cancer rates tend to be low in countries such as Japan or China where people have the custom to regularly consume green tea. Still, we cannot say with 100% certainty that green tea prevents cancer in people. Other clinical studies show that the polyphenols in green tea, may play an important role in the prevention of cancer. Researchers also believe that polyphenols can help kill cancerous cells and  actually stop them from multiplying.

For instance, in one study made on 472 women with various stages of breast cancer, researchers found that women who drank the most green tea had the least spread of cancer. These results were conclusive for those who found themselves in the early stages of breast cancer. So green tea health benefits when it comes to cancer were actually confirmed when it comes to the early stages of the disease or to the prevention part.

Another clinical study done with ovarian cancer patients in China, showed to the researchers that women who drank at least one cup of green tea per day lived longer with the disease than those who didn’t drink green tea. In fact, those who drank the highest quantity of tea, lived the longest.

Green Tea and Heart Condition

It seems that drinking green tea can rapidly improves the health of the delicate cells lining the blood vessels and helps lower the risk of developing a heart disease. To be more specific, green tea visibly improves the function of endothelial cells. Endothelial cell dysfunction have a key role in the development of clogged arteries, a process known as atherosclerosis. Green tea health benefits when it comes to heart diseases where actually known to practitioners in China and Japan long before the contemporary studies. There green tea was traditionally used to prevent some diseases.

Researchers still aren’t sure why exactly green tea lowers the cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Studies show that black tea has similar effects. Researchers estimate that the rate of heart attack decreases by 11% with consumption of 3 cups of tea per day.

Green Tea and Diabetes

Green tea has traditionally been used to control blood sugar levels. Many animal studies show that it may have a role in the prevention of  the development of type 1 diabetes and actually slow the progression once the disease has developed. Green tea is supposed to help regulate glucose in the body.

In the animal studies I previously mentioned, the researchers actually gave green and black teas to diabetic rats for about three months. They found both kinds of tea inhibited diabetic cataracts. The teas also had a blood-sugar-lowering effect.

Green Tea and Liver Problems

Population-based clinical studies have shown that those persons who have a habit of drinking high quantities of green tea, ten or more cups a day are less likely to develop any kind of liver disease. This beverage  is also a great liver protector when it comes to damaging effects of alcohol consuming . Other animal studies made on rats have shown green tea is a great adjutant when it comes to liver tumors.

Green Tea and Weight Loss

Other clinical studies have shown a fact that I believe is well known for those of you who have some weight issues. These studies acknowledged that green tea extract may be exactly what we need if  the fight is against supplementary kilos and a slow metabolism. The green tea extract seems to boost metabolism and help burn fat. One study from 2008 concerning the caffeine component in teas, found that the combination of green tea and caffeine seriously improved weight loss and maintenance in people who were overweight and moderately obese.

“Tea began as a medicine and grew into a beverage.” (Kakuzo Okakura)

So, indeed tea begun as a medicine and developed into a beverage. Drinking green tea can help you keep up with your body and prevent unpleasant health related situations. Though green tea seems like the universal solution, it is not a great idea to renounce to your treatment if you undergo any or to stop making regulate visits to the doctor.
