5 Reasons to Stop Using Tea Bags and Start Enjoying Loose Tea
Carmen Rotaru

The loose leaves vs tea bags debate is really old and there are pros and cons on each side, but the loose tea option is usually recommended for a real and unique tea experience.  Find out why loose teas are much more recommended than the tea bags.

Tea is more than just a beverage we enjoy now and then with friends or on a cold winter night, tea has become a social leant and an important supplement for those who prefer a healthy lifestyle. There are many people out there for whom tea has evolved into a way of life, but many are under the false impression that tea bags are the only possible option.

I myself have to admit that I preferred tea bags for a long time, because they were easy to use, until I became more attentive to my diet and I started to read about healthy dishes and beverages, tea being one of them. Buying tea bags from the supermarket or from the small shops near my home isn’t a choice anymore as I discovered what real tea means.

This article though isn’t about my own experience, but about the loose tea vs tea bags debate. Of course there are pros and cons on each side, but for the tea connoisseurs nothing compares to the real beverage which results from loose leaves and not from the generic tea bags we all use when we are in a hurry.

#1 Loose tea means flavor and superior quality

The main difference between loose teas and tea bags is obviously the size of the leaves. When producing the tea bags, whole leaves are chopped, sliced and diced into small particles ranging from 0.2 to 1.5 millimeters called fanning and dusts. With all this slicing and dicing, the tea compounds interact with moisture and oxygen, leading to rapid quality loss.

Whole tea leaves contain natural compounds such as antioxidants and polyphenols , and different essential oils which are what we would call the basis of the amazing tea flavor and taste. When the leaves are broken up, those oils tend to evaporate, leaving the fannings with a dull aroma which will lead to a tasteless beverage. When buying loose teas we have to make sure we are storing them correctly, somewhere where light, heat and humidity will not reach them. In this case buying some storage tea boxes will be recommended.

# 2 More varieties to enjoy

At a first glance the supermarket shelves are full of many varieties of tea bags, but truth be told after going through the majority of them you will find out that your choices are in fact highly limited.

It is true that teas come from just one plant, Camellia Sinensis, but depending on their harvesting and processing part they can be sold as green, white, oolong and black teas, each with its special taste and aroma. The best part is that each major tea type features hundreds of varieties depending on the region where they were cultivated and on the processing of the leaves after harvesting. What is more, there are hundreds of tea blends out there, so we can say that the world lives in a permanent tea party.

A large part of these varieties are sold as loose teas, so the fun part about loose teas is that, when bored with a variety you can pass to another or even try a blend. Another interesting thing is that you can buy whole leaves of different varieties and blend them together on your own, creating your own personal beverage. When buying loose teas the possibilities are limitless, you just need a bit of imagination. To convince you that loose teas are really worth it, the tea lattes are much more aromatic and tasty than those made with tea bags.

# 3 Real Health Benefits

Loose teas contain large and whole tea leaves meaning that they keep the tea plant’s powerful antioxidants. So drinking tea is really healthy. For instance, black tea is becoming more and more popular due to the recent studies which have shown that this kind of tea has in its composition 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables.

All teas extracted from Camellia Sinensis plant are rich in polyphenols, which is a type of antioxidant. These amazing natural nutrients search for cell-damaging free radicals in the body and detoxify them, which actually means that black tea is 10 times more efficient than veggies. There are many studies about tea which conclude that tea has a role to play in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, boosting the immune system or aiding with weight loss. There are also researchers who believe that tea has a role to play in preventing certain cancer types.

Loose teas are free of fannings and dust which means that the health benefits aren’t lost. It is very easy to understand that more leafy surface area means more natural oils and health-boosting natural chemicals. Tea bags contain only fannings and dusts which have lost most of their natural properties in the slicing and dicing procedure.

# 4 Loose tea brings you closer to nature

Loose leaf teas are the most natural form of the tea plant available on the market. When starting a nature based diet or simply want to be closer to nature, loose teas represent the better choice.

The fannings which end up in a tea bag are processed in a factory and lose their natural aroma and characteristics. When opening up a tea bag you will be surprised to find bits and parts which don’t resemble at all with the original tea leaves. Sometimes it is hard to tell what those pieces of debris are in fact.

Choosing a loose tea is choosing in fact a less processed tea, closer to nature and to the reason we are all starting to drink tea in the first place: its aroma.

# 5 Loose tea is a great gift

Imagine buying for somebody tea bags and taking them as a gift. It doesn’t look very nice, does it? I mean it is very easy to go up to a supermarket and buy tea bags.

Loose teas are special and aromatic, and there are many reasons for which you can offer them as a gift: flavor, taste, health benefits, their history and so on. Either a tea connoisseur or a tea newbie, your friend will appreciate your gift. Besides the tea, you can offer your friend a nice traditional tea set, special cups and pots or different designed tea boxes for storage.

If you aren’t convinced to renounce to the tea bags, but still are curious about loose teas, the good news is that you can have the best of both worlds through tea filter bags. You can buy them online or from the supermarket. The technique of using them is pretty simple: add the leaves in the filter bag and simply add hot water. Those bags are large enough for the loose leaves to expand and release their natural flavor.

Tea is special because of its history and many traditions which were built around it. Buying loose leaf teas may be the start of a long lasting passion and of a healthy life style.
